The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) reported a total of 72,263 applications for vouchers by the end of February 2025, with 97% for grants towards air source heat pump installations.

The total number of applications in February 2025 across all technology types saw a 3% decrease on the previous month, partly reflecting the fewer working days in February. However, it is 54% higher than the same month in 2024. February 2025 had the third highest number of applications since the scheme began.

Up until the end of February, a total of 62,031 vouchers were issued. There was a 3% increase on the previous month, and February volumes were 69% higher than same month in the previous year; 3,148 in February 2025 compared to 1,868 in February 2024. February 2025 was the month with the second highest volume of vouchers issued since the scheme began.

There were 2,587 grants paid in February 2025, which was the second highest month since the scheme began, bringing the total number of grants paid through the scheme to 46,707.

As the BUS progresses, industry leaders continue to stress the importance of continued government support and call for further investment in training and consumer education.

“Government funding is moving the needle on heat pump adoption,” says Vishavjeet Sodhi, head of heating & cooling business at LG Business Solutions. “But while progress is being made, the pace of adoption must accelerate to align with the current net-zero ambitions.

“The focus must remain on making heat pumps more accessible, both financially and logistically. Greater investment in installer training, consumer education, and long-term policy stability will be key to ensuring that this shift to sustainable home heating continues to scale up.”

Gav Murray, Hive Heating director at Centrica New Business Net Zero, says: “The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has helped drive adoption levels of heat pump technology across the UK, despite a slight dip in applications last month. The government must continue to provide funding and additional incentives to accelerate the rate at which homeowners switch to the green technology. Collaborating with industry stakeholders will be central to this and help ensure the workforce is in place to deliver on the heat pump revolution.”

Daniel Särefjord, Aira UK CEO, adds: “The latest  figures make it clear: demand for heat pumps is surging, with year-on-year sales growing every month since the new Labour government took office. Households are ready to switch to clean energy – the government must now deliver on its promises and lay the necessary legislation to accelerate the heat pump rollout across the UK.”
