Altecnic’s MD Alan Sherwin is stepping down after 18 years with the Stafford-based specialist in plumbing and heating products and systems. Having spent the last eight years as MD, Alan is retiring and handing over the role to Gary Perry, current OEM Sales & Technical Director, at the end of April.
Alan joined Altecnic in February 2000 and became Finance Director shortly after. He says he was extremely proud to be offered the MD role in 2010 by Marco Caleffi, President of Altecnic’s parent company Caleffi. Central to any MD’s role is to grow the business profitability, and over the last eight years Altecnic has grown by a third to a turnover of £40m. This growth has enabled the workforce to almost double over the last 10 years, with the business now employing around 90 staff.
He has also taken Altecnic not only through accreditations like ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 18001, but also to be the first business in the sector to achieve Carbon Neutral status.
The latest accolade and one of Alan’s proudest achievements is to take the business through the Investors in People (IIP) Award this year.
“Employees are a business’s most important asset – a phrase that is often claimed without substance, but in Altecnic’s case it is true,” says Alan. “I’ve always believed that it is of paramount importance to treat everyone in the business fairly and to provide a high quality work environment, so the introduction of a qualified Human Resource Manager was a key element moving forward and the IIP accreditation provided the official ‘seal of approval’ when we received it this year.”
As he makes plans for spending more time with his grandchildren – in addition to playing golf and cycling – Alan says there is no better feeling than “when things come together” and he is grateful for the years at Altecnic and the relationship developed with Caleffi. “Above all,” he says, “I’m grateful for the team that have been with me over the past 18 years. Without them, I wouldn’t have had the opportunities that I’ve had at Altecnic.”
